1. Look inside the port (lint is the usual suspect)
Turn the phone off and shine a flashlight into the charging port. Pocket lint gets packed in over months until the cable can't seat fully. If you see a grey layer at the back, gently loosen it with a wooden toothpick or plastic tool — never metal, and never liquid. If it's packed hard, leave it for a professional clean so you don't damage the pins.
2. Swap the cable and the adapter
Cables fray inside long before they look damaged. Try a different, known-good cable and a different wall adapter. Certified accessories are worth it — cheap ones can charge erratically or trigger "accessory not supported" messages.
3. Restart (or force restart)
A software hiccup can stop charging. Restart normally first. If the phone is frozen, force restart: on iPhone 8 and later, press and release volume up, press and release volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
4. Check settings and alerts
- Optimized Battery Charging can pause charging at 80% to protect the battery — that's normal, not a fault. Find it under Settings › Battery (Battery Health & Charging, or Charging on newer models).
- Liquid detection alerts block charging until the port is dry. Unplug, let it air-dry, and don't override the warning. (More on that in what to do when your phone gets wet.)
- Update iOS — charging bugs do get fixed in updates.
5. Test wireless charging
If your iPhone supports wireless or MagSafe charging, try it. If wireless works but the cable doesn't, the problem is almost certainly the port. If neither works, it may be the battery or something deeper.
When to book a repair
If you've tried all five and it still won't charge reliably, it's time for a professional look. Often a deep clean is all it needs; if the port is damaged, it can usually be replaced the same visit. See our mobile charging port repair in Milton.

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to clean my iPhone charging port with a toothpick?
A wooden toothpick used gently, with the phone powered off, is generally safe for loosening lint. Avoid metal objects, liquids and blasting compressed air deep into the port.
Why does my iPhone stop charging at 80%?
That's usually Optimized Battery Charging (or an 80% charge limit) protecting the battery. You can check it under Settings › Battery.
How much does it cost to fix an iPhone charging port?
A cleaning costs far less than a replacement. Call or text (365) 351-4247 with your model for an exact quote.
